London Olympic Velodrome Sound System
London, UK

Client: Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA)

Vanguardia provided the design and engineering of the complete production sound system in the Velodrome for the Games and beyond. This included detailed design, technical assurance and commissioning of the system. During the Games we also provided system support to the operators throughout all sessions in the venue.

The system, which has been permanently installed in the venue, comprises d&b audiotechnik loudspeakers and amplifiers with signal distribution via Dante to Lake LM44 controllers at each rack location, with a Yamaha 01V console. The system is also integrated into the venue’s fire alarm system and provides the voice alarm function in the seating bowl.

The main challenge of the system design was to overcome the extremely live acoustic environment within the bowl to enable high quality production sound and intelligible announcements to be enjoyed by the audience. The operators were very happy with the system quality, which did great justice to the Olympic Veldrome theme, composed by the Chemical Brothers. The audience engagement in the venue also confirmed the value of clear communication between the event commentators and the spectators.
